LANDMARKS

Landmarks are not always famous or even appealing to everyone.  But, Ivan captures the local landmarks in central Virginia that have great meaning to many in the area.  Whether “Shepherd Stadium” in Colonial Heights where many locals played baseball as youngsters or “Seven Springs Grocery” in Matoaca where families visited for an ice cream cone on a hot summer day or even the “Swift Creek Mill Theatre” where many families have spent an evening forgetting the hassles of daily living while watching a live play. One of his favorite landmarks is “Dyson Farm” built by his great-grandfather W. B. Perkinson at which he helped string tobacco as a boy and remembers the annual family reunions.  “Holt Brothers Matoaca Grocery” is really special because it lets the older generation re-live a time in 1938 when Cokes were 5 cents and gas was 15 cents a gallon.

Ivan’s painting of “Hopewell’s First Hospital 1915-1920, Hopewell, VA.” is one of several that depict landmarks at City Point in Hopewell, a vibrant town in the early 20th century and a vital part of the Union Army’s headquarters during the Civil War.
